about

"'Poison Apple' is one of my favourites - written about code-breaker Alan Turing and his terrible treatment after the war when he was chemically castrated for being homosexual. He eventually committed suicide by eating an apple dipped in cyanide, a reference to Disney's Snow White, which Turing had been very taken with. The Wicked Witch's spell, "dip the apple in the brew/let the sleeping death seep right through" became a mantra Turing was known to recite." - Adam Kidd

lyrics

Poison Apple

Old summer days seem to fade
Hanging outside in the rain
With an old photograph of my friend
Who passed away long ago
And now it’s far too late
To bring him back again
The way I always dreamt
Well I’m sorry baby, I’m not cut out for this

Dip the apple in the brew
Let the sleeping death seep right through
My mind’s not right now
Makes me hunger for a bite
All of the secrets they will be kept
I’ve got no loose lips I just refused to repent
In this old fashioned world
We don’t care who gets hurt

How could I be so naive
I gave myself away
So now they’ll punish me
As my body starts to change
I know I’ll never run again
The cracks they’ll start to show
My mind it starts to slow
Well I’m sorry baby, I’m not cut out for this

Dip the apple in the brew
Let the sleeping death seep right through
My mind’s not right now
Makes me hunger for a bite
All of the secrets they will be kept
I’ve got no loose lips I just refused to repent
In this old fashioned world
We don’t care who gets hurt

Well I'm sorry baby, I’m not cut out for this
I’ve been trying hard but lately
It all seems so poisonous

Dip the apple in the brew
Let the sleeping death seep right through
My mind’s not right now
Makes me hunger for a bite
All of the secrets they will be kept
I’ve got no loose lips I just refused to repent
In this old fashioned world
We don’t care who gets hurt
